3. Adjective Agreement Rules¶

A. Gender Agreement¶

Spanish adjectives must agree with the gender (masculine/feminine) of the noun they modify.

Adjectives ending in -o/a¶

Masculine: bonito, alto, nuevo
Feminine: bonita, alta, nueva

Examples: - el gato negro / the black cat (masculine) - la gata negra / the black cat (feminine) - el libro nuevo / the new book - la casa nueva / the new house

Adjectives ending in -e¶

No gender change - grande, fuerte, inteligente, interesante

Examples: - el coche grande / the big car - la casa grande / the big house

Adjectives ending in consonant¶

Most don't change for gender - azul, gris, fácil, difícil, joven

Examples: - el libro azul / the blue book - la mesa azul / the blue table

Exception - Nationality adjectives: - español / española (Spanish) - francés / francesa (French) - alemán / alemana (German) - inglés / inglesa (English)

B. Number Agreement¶

Adjectives must also agree with the number (singular/plural) of the noun.

Making Plurals¶

Ends in vowel → add -s: - bonito → bonitos - bonita → bonitas - grande → grandes

Ends in consonant → add -es: - azul → azules - fácil → fáciles - joven → jóvenes

Examples: - el gato negro → los gatos negros - la casa nueva → las casas nuevas - el libro azul → los libros azules

D. Adjective Placement¶

After Noun (typical)¶

Most adjectives come after the noun - un libro interesante / an interesting book - una casa grande / a big house - un coche rojo / a red car

Before Noun (limited)¶

Some adjectives change meaning when placed before the noun

grande: - un gran hombre / a great man - un hombre grande / a big man

pobre: - un pobre hombre / a poor (pitiful) man - un hombre pobre / a poor (not rich) man

viejo: - un viejo amigo / an old (long-time) friend - un amigo viejo / an old (aged) friend

Always Before Noun¶

bueno/a (good) - buen libro
malo/a (bad) - mal día
mucho/a (much) - mucha gente
poco/a (little) - poco tiempo

Note: bueno and malo shorten to buen, mal before masculine singular nouns - un buen libro / a good book - un mal día / a bad day

E. Irregular Comparatives/Superlatives¶

Some adjectives have irregular comparatives.
